Unit Mission Statement
University Communications serves as William & Mary’s central communications office. The office is made up of two teams that support and promote the overall vision, mission and values of the university. The University News & Media team serves as the primary link to the press and media on all communications fronts including campus-wide press releases, manages university-level social media channels, and produces online W&M News features and photography that promote and celebrate the work of faculty, staff and students. The team also serves as the lead on research communications and crisis communications. The University Web & Design team works in partnership with campus communication professionals to establish creative vision for university, leadership and internal communications. The team provides a suite of services to support implementation of that vision including collaborative planning, concepts, design, strategy and communications tools.
Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Vice President for Communications & Chief Communications Officer, the Project Manager (PM) works collaboratively with the Director of University Web & Design and the Director of News & Media within University Communications as a key leader. The PM serves as the point person for all projects and is responsible for project leadership and management, strategically assessing individual project needs, and bridging communication among stakeholders. The Project Manager leads project kickoffs and brainstorming and is responsible for overseeing project creation, implementation, management, production, execution, documentation, and evaluation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
- Significant experience (typically 5-7 years) with project management, developing and leading cross-functional project teams from inception to completion including managing project schedules, review cycles, and delivery of assets to internal and external teams.
- Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with a service-oriented approach, commitment to excellence, and the proven ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Advanced knowledge of project management methodology and practices.
- Experience implementing communication plans and strategies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification or similar certification.
- Knowledge of website, new media, design, and print production processes and tools with evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Experience working in higher education.
- Experience using the project management system Teamwork.
- Strong consulting and leadership skills.
- Experience identifying short and long-range strategic goals.
